Cerberus, the three-headed beast-god.
He began as a common monster, was eventually recruited as a demon, and eventually started a cult to ascend to godhood. Remarkably
cunning for its appearance, it has led its people into several holy wars in the past. After a terrible defeat several decades
ago that cost him many followers, Cerberus suddenly retracted his ways of violence and promoted peace and good nature among
his men. This is assumed to have been done under the pressure of the other deities. Some temples have been found following
his darker ways, but for the most part, Cerberus actually does seem to have been genuinely "retired" from his darker
days.
Appearance: a great black hound with three heads, each with either red, green, or blue eyes.
Alternate Names: Great Shadow Hound, Dark Trinity, Beast of Three Voices
Priesthood: initiated through an ancient ritual involving a heavy theme of shadows and specially blessed blood (from any
source, mostly chickens). Followers of Cerberus are encouraged to maintain and encourage peace, but are not barred from violence
and are taught courage. Honesty and honor are strictly upheld by his priests, and their purpose is to provide knowledge,
protect the innocent, and to peacefully gather converts. Only a few decades ago, he was a traditional, full blown, warring
cult that demanded bloody sacrifices, but Cerberus himself seems to frown upon these methods.
Symbols: three-headed dog silhouette, a black animal's paw, and the number 3 in general (particularly when in silver).
Domains: shadow, illusion, and chaos
Afterlife: those who are just and merciful are given a land of shadows where they can create life and objects as they
please and mingle with the other dead. The wicked are left in a replica of their own world, only things begin disappearing
randomly and slowly.
"The beast bore three heads, with eyes made of sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Each head spoke in its own voice,
but they were in perfect harmony. The people of the village asked what it wished, hoping to avoid such a terrible being's
wrath. Its three heads spoke apart this time. 'Blood,' said the first. 'War,' said the second. 'Darkness,' the third."
-from the Tome of Shadows
"His great belly filled with blood at last, the great shadow god was sated. It slept, with one head always awake
and aware. From the sleeping maws of the others, there poured the shades that tainted life, but did not corrupt. They made
shades of gray from the whites of the world, creating choice and individual thought where they were absent. It no longer
demanded sacrifice and fury from its priests, and wished that they would repay the world for their generous donations to his
greatness."
